Background and History
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or motor neurone disease (MND), is a muscle wasting condition that affects individuals and those who care for them across the world. To help people with the disease, groups of people have come together to form associations (which are listed under the Directory of Associations).
The International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations was founded in 1992 to provide an international community for individual ALS/MND associations from around the world. Our vision is to engage with our members, prospective members and other organisations to share resources globally, advance awareness and support people with ALS/MND worldwide.
The Alliance functions primarily as a forum for the exchange of information on all aspects of the disease, including research and management of care. It also provides support to member associations through networking and sharing ideas on good practice. Its developing role is the advancement of international advocacy campaigns on behalf of people with ALS/MND. Today, members from more than 35 countries worldwide have joined in these efforts.
As a part of these activities, the Alliance works in partnership with the MND Association of England, Wales and Northern Ireland on the International Symposium on ALS/MND each year, with an Alliance member serving as the host organisation. The Symposium is the pre-eminent meeting bringing together leading researchers and health care professionals worldwide to present and debate key innovations in their fields.
The Alliance holds its own Annual Alliance Meeting to coincide with the Symposium. This meeting provides a global forum for members to exchange information about the care and support of people with ALS/MND everywhere. Members discuss issues that specifically affect them and share initiatives and ideas that have the potential to affect change and create new programmes in other parts of the world.
The Alliance’s mission is:
- To promote optimal care and support for people living with ALS/MND worldwide
- To facilitate information exchange and education at an international level
- To encourage collaboration, dissemination and translation of ALS/MND research
The Alliance’s objectives are:
